Free wills for charity

A brand new UK based website offers free will writing services for those wishing to leave bequests to charity

Looking to leave money to charity but scared of the bill that lawyers charge you (and the charity)? Look no further. A new website owned and operated by a UK based legal firm called Last Cawthra Feather LLP provides a no-hassle, low-cost (free, actually) service which hopes to encourage people to give to charity after they are gone.

“Going to a solicitor is quite an intimidating process, and that is why most people haven’t written a will,” explains managing partner at Legal365.com in an interview with Third Sector magazine. “”The process of writing a will isn’t a pleasant one. But if you are writing it on the internet, you can do it as it suits you”.

He also said that the idea to offer the service for free to charities came about because he felt the money that was being used to pay solicitors to write wills could be used to fund their front-line work instead.

Every year, approximately 600,000 people die in the UK. According to the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) only 30,000 leave a charitable bequest. Despite this, legacy gifts are worth almost 2 billion pounds to the voluntary sector. In fact, legacy gifts provide around 12 per cent of all income for the largest fundraising charities.

Whether Legal365.com will be able to help the British third sector overcome the financial crisis it is living remains to be seen, what is certain is that the internet has not yet fully been taken advantage of by charities or by other sectors, such as the legal sector.
