LATVIA: SLIC informative and inspection campaign “Asbestos – 2006”

Latvia is heading coordinated campaigns of the Senior Labour Inspectors Committee (SLIC). Those are related to the implementation of legislative enactments in the field of occupational safety and health at the work place or in special areas, as indicated by the state executive institutions which are responsible for control of compliance with the labour protection enactments and which also have to secure that the occupational safety and health of employees is not endangered during the performance of their work. SLIC campaigns shall be jointly implemented at the national level; therefore Latvia is involved in campaign and have to achieve significant comparable results for analysis. Therefore, for the implementation of SLIC campaign 2006 on asbestos, several checklists have been prepared to be used by inspectors of the member states when they will visit areas where the works related with removal of asbestos are being performed. It is also important that the above-mentioned checklists have to reflect the new Directive on asbestos (2003/18/EK)* and shall fully correspond with the national regulatory enactments and practice in the member states involved in SLIC campaign. Check lists provided by the working group refer to the planned activities, which are related with the removal of asbestos-containing materials. During the campaign inspectors will be trained to perform inspections at the areas as well as informed that in the particular area/premises/work place the removal works of asbestos-containing materials are being performed. www.vdi.gov.lv
