EU: the power of lifelong learning

Only 10,8% of Europeans are in any form of lifelong learning : the European Commission wants to close the skills gap

di Zesst

Although the number of students in higher education is rising, children from better-off homes are still much more likely to go to university than children from poorer homes. The Communication of the European Commission argues that the US and Australian model of tuition fees plus support for disadvantaged students may be a better route to both equity and efficiency. In 2004, 32% of the EU workforce was classed as ?low skilled?, but forecasts show that, by 2010, only 15% of new jobs will be for those with only basic schooling. Lifelong learning could be a recipe for ensuring equity and efficiency in the access to knowledge and to the labour-market. But some Member States have to revise urgently their plan to be more inclusive and … competitive on the long run. http://bookshop.eu.int/eubookshop/
