A first for large scale donations in Portugal, a ?500 million cancer research centre will open its doors next month, funding came from a single private donor, António Champalimaud. The Champalimaud Center for the Unknown, based in Lisbon, Portugal, will be inaugurated on October 5, 2010. The centre will focus on cancer research, as well as run a neuroscience program. The ?500 million was part of Champalimaud’s will, he passed away in 2004. In it he left a quarter of his wealth to medical research.
