The successful fair trade of cheese region

Who would ever have imagined that the Montbéliarde cattle breed would become one of the strengths of Franche-Comté’s decentralised cooperation. Probably no one. And yet in the field of international cooperation for development, this French region has a successful cheese industry, world famous food and livestock farming and a well looked after environment as well. “Regarding decentralised cooperation, our region has adopted two models”, explains the director of the International Cooperation Department, Christine Garnier, “there is the fair trade model with projects in Morocco and Senegal and the model that is stimulated by shared economic interests in China and Russia”. In the Ouarzazate region (Morocco), Franche-Comté carries out food farming programmes as well as providing training and encouraging trading between breeders in both regions. In China it’s different: Franche-Comté and its companies are involved in the province of Hanui, to develop tourism in rural areas. The budget allocated by Franche-Comté in 2011 to support local associations and to the Centre de Ressources de la Coopération amounts to more than ? 450,000, compared to ? 301,000 in 2007.
