The newly re-elected prime minister of Northern Cyprus, Dervis Eroglu has drafted a law that may stifle Turkish Cypriot non-governmental organisations and could stem the flow of EU aid money to the north, angry civil society activists in the South of the island have warned. One opponent described the proposed legislation as “draconian”. Emine Erk, a human rights lawyer, voiced suspicion that the “government’s” aim is both to exert control over NGOs and “tap” into EU funds for itself. www.cyprus-mail.com
