Labour MP and shadow welfare secretary Yvette Cooper has attacked the government’s austerity measures saying that it will be women who will bear the brunt of the cuts. A detailed report conducted by the House of Commons library reveals that of the £8bn raised through direct tax in 2014-15, women will pay £5.8bn and men only £2.2bn. This is without taking into account the council tax freeze, the abolition of the child trust fund or indirect taxes like Vat. www.vitaeurope.org
