On the 22nd March the 2005 Report on the voluntary sector has been presented in Rome.

The voluntary sector has more than 800 thousand operators, 12 thousand employees, 1.6 billion euros turnover and nearly 7 million users.

The information, provided by Istat, shows an astonishing growth: from 1995 to 2003 associations have been growing by 152%, from 8,343 to 21,021 units.

Although the most important regions for voluntary sector remain Lombardy, Tuscany, Emilia and Veneto, there has been a great growth in central-southern Italy, where regions such as Sicily, Molise, Campania and Marche have shown a growth trend of more than 300%.

But besides a more balanced expansion of the voluntary sector on the whole of Italy there are some little alarming factors, such as the structural thinning of the not for profit entities and, most of all, the difficulty to bring young people in. The average age of volunteers varies in fact from 46 to 65 years .
