Forests can play a key role in solving today’s major challenges: poverty, sustainable food production, fresh water scarcity and climate change. Yet deforestation has accelerated: 50% of the earth’s rain forests were lost in the last 60 years alone.
WeForest is an
international nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable reforestation. Its main
objective is to answer to the challenges of global warming and to promote the international movement to recover the forests that have disappeared.
Up to now 3 million trees have been planted. WeForest runs reforestation programmes in Africa (Senegal, Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya) but also in India, Brazil, Philippines….
Together with reforestation, WeForest promotes community-based initiatives. The nonprofit organization believes that local communities must benefit directly from the planting activities. In order to have a sustainable impact, local communities are trained in understanding the value of growing and protecting diverse forests and are directly involved in planting trees and maintaining the forests. This is made possible by offering local people training periods as well as part-time and full-time jobs, empowering them to be entrepreneurial.
WeForest are a non-profit association in Belgium with offices in France, The Netherlands and soon in the USA.
