Spain: Saving banks grant 51 million in microcredits

Women and immigrants are the most frequent recipients. Spanish banks are now looking to attract NGOs to develop their microcredit system

di Redazione

Last year, Spanish savings banks granted 4,927 microloans that amounted to 51,2 million ?. Eighteen out of the 46 Spanish savings banks had just introduced a microloans programme in 2006. Between 2001 and 2006, the number of microloans granted has been of 9,043, which represent 97,3 million ?.

In Spain 65% of microloans? recipients are women and around 70% people from migrant origin. Generally it can be said that these are 35 year olds who want to start a business of their own, need around 10,000 ? to do it and have a clear idea of its characteristics. Most of these businesses belong to the service sector.

The Spanish Network of Microloans launched by the savings banks wants to attract other organisations such as NGOs with a view to a further development of microloans, given that the aims of this network are to disseminate this system, making it more available and promoting a better regulation of it.
