Italy: Prodi meets Italian NGOs

It is the first time since 2001 that an Italian Prime Minister meets with Italian NGOs

di Redazione

The first meeting between an Italian Prime Minister and NGO representatives since 2001 when Silvio Berlusconi met with them at the G8 in Genoa. ?We have been waiting for this moment for five years? says Sergio Marelli, President of the Italian NGOs association, in front of Italy?s Prime Minister Romano Prodi in Rome.

The allocation of economic resources are the only dampner: while NGOs ask for a major allocation of funds to struggle against poverty Prodi says that at present there is a great lack of resources.

The Prime Minister is, however, ready to commit immediately to paying off its debts and to respect the commitments taken with the International Community.

A first step will be to contribute to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria: 20 million euros have not yet been paid for the year 2005, and 130 million euros are due for 2006. This will be officially announced at the G8 in St. Petersburg. For this occasion NGOs have presented a document of specific requests on some of the issues on the St. Petersburg agenda. The Prime Minister is ready to cooperate with the civil society in the promotion of development.
