In an effort to counter worries about infringement of press freedom by governments in Europe, the editor-in-chief of Germany’s Stern magazine and the EU media commissioner Viviane Reding have launched the European Charter on Freedom of the Press. The charter states that journalism in all media be «ree of persecution, repression and of political interference by government», and was motivated by worries of the state of press freedom in Eastern Europe, but also in Italy.
