Philippe Lioret’s latest film, “Welcome”, tells the story of a young Kurd and illegal immigrant, determined to swim the Channel to join his loved one in London; and a French swimming instructor, whose destinies collide in Calais, northern France. Ever since its release in France on March 11, the film has sparked huge controversy on treatment of illegal immigrants, involving local NGOs, the French immigration minister Eric Besson, and the film’s director himself. Indeed, Philippe Lioret stated in an open letter to Eric Besson, published by “Le Monde”, that refugees’ treatment in France was similar to that of the Jews in the Second World War.
