Portugal: New Presidency ready for action

July 1st: the day Portugal takes over the presidency of the EU. What is in store? Social responsibility and employment for all

di Zesst

Social inclusion, the fight against poverty, in particular child poverty, reconciling work with personal and family life and the implementation of gender-based perspectives in all policy domains, are just some of Portugal? s concerns.

In addition to the intergovernmental conference (IGC) called on to negociate a new EU treaty, the Portuguese Presidency will also push for a ? realistic? approach to legal migration. Fernando Medina, Employment State Secretary, is keen "to include social inclusion alongside tighter border controls, to help solve Europe?s looming job-shortage crisis".

The 10th anniversary of the European Strategy for Employment sounds like an opportunity to focus on one of the pillars of the European model: promoting the creation of more and better jobs. The search for a better balance between flexibility and security in the labour market, known as "flexicurity", provides a new framework for social dialogue together with the Commission? s publication of a new document.

"A stronger Union for a better world" is the ambition of this six-month Presidency which will seek to achieve "concrete progress", according to State Secretay Manuel Lobo, especially on EU?s external relations, with an "EuroMed" Ministerial meeting on migration.
